5.2 Infiltration Excess Overland Flow This type of runoff generation is also called Hortonian or Horton overland flow, and is the basic tool of engineering hydrology, particularly for urban storm water hydrology. The concept can be best demonstrated using the infiltration theory from pages 36-39.

saturation from above ; described by Horton in a series of papers in the '30s and '40s, where he suggested it was the principal, if not only, mechanism of overland flow and occurred on virtually all slopes Can Hortonian overland flow generation be observed on all land-use types in the investigated areas in the Central European low mountain range? 2. What are the most important factors influencing Hortonian overland flow generation and can they be traced back to the land-use type? 3. Does this lead to soil erosion processes and under which conditions?

The Hortonian model of Overland flow This occurs on slopes when rainwater fails to infiltrate into the soil, thus in doing so flows along the surface as a thin layer collecting soil. It is more pronounced in arid regions where soils are thin and without vegetation and the underlying rocks are usually impermeable.

Hortonian overland flow

THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS AND MODEL DEVELOPMENTAfter rainfall intensity exceeds the infiltration capacity of the soil, the Hortonian overland flow hydrographs can be divided into a rainfall excess phase and a recession-infiltration phase. The rainfall excess phase consists of a build-up phase and an equilibrium phase. Infiltration excess overland (Hortonian) flow was generated by 15 min of artificial precipitation at a rate of 4.2 mm min-1 which was roughly 2–3 times the saturated soil conductivity. To prevent algal growth in the soil a light oil instead of water was used. Overland flow, which is examined here, is an important hydrological response to storms of a catchment. And it is also a main component of hillslope hydrology.

Horton overland flow is rare in vegetated humid region. It is common in areas devoid of vegetation such as; - semi-arid rangelands - compacted soil, e.g. logging roads - paved urban area, e.g. parking lots Runoff to rainfall ratio varies significantly. On catchements Hortonian Overland Flow • An overland flow of water occurring more or less simultaneously over a drainage basin when rainfall exceeds the infiltration capacity of the basin. • R. E. Saturation Excess Overland Flow occurs when the soil becomes saturated, and any additional precipitation or irrigation causes runoff. This type of runoff is the main mechanism behind VSA hydrology.
